Listen to the MUSTN'Ts, child. Listen to the DON'Ts. Listen to the SHOULDN'Ts, the IMPOSSIBLEs, the WON'Ts.
Listen to the NEVER HAVES, then listen close to me-   ANYTHING can happen, child. ANYTHING can be.     ~ Shel Silverstein

Some people believe that students with significant cognitive disabilities cannot successfully learn academic content. Studies show that this is a misperception. The education system should start with the assumption that every child can learn. This is called “the least dangerous assumption” because exposing students to learning is not harmful, but keeping them from it is.

Automaticity

Automaticity is defined as fast, accurate and effortless word identification at the single word level. The speed and accuracy at which single words are identified is the best predictor of comprehension.

S.P.I.R.E. Speed Drills

Students practice reading words of similar phonetic patterns. We look for improvement in amount of words read until a new vowel is introduced. At that time, there is often a natural decrease until the student is automatic with that vowel.

Words are introduced one vowel at a time.

The vowel is then presented in words with blends.

After all vowels are introduced, words are no longer presented in isolation, but mixed with beginning and ending blends and digraphs.

Data Collection

Students keep a graph of their progress giving visual feedback of how many words they read per minute. This lets them see if they are improving or if they need more work on a particular area.
